Joaquin Cabrera, 57, of Baldwin, was arrested following the crash around 2:24 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 13, in Baldwin, said the Nassau County Police.
The Nassau County Police Department Ambulance was traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway near the intersection of Grand Avenue while responding to an aided call with its emergency lights activated.
The ambulance was then hit by a 2006 Hummer being driven by Cabrera eastbound in the westbound lane of the highway., police said
Police said Cabrera suddenly cut across the center median and struck the front driver's side of the ambulance. He then fled the scene eastbound on the highway.
After a thorough investigation, Nassau County Police located the defendant in his vehicle behind 684 Sunrise Highway a short time later.
When stopped, Cabrera had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, police said.
The ambulance medic was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a dislocated left ulna, fractured left hand, and substantial pain to the neck and back area.
Cabrera was taken to a local hospital for an unrelated illness.
He was charged with:
- DWI
- Assault
- Reckless endangerment
- Leaving the scene of a crash
- Reckless driving
He was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, Dec. 14, in Mineola.
